Walking backwards down the stairs Trying to get higher How can I get anywheres Walking backwards down the stairs Watching life elude me Slipping through my grasp Oh I know the truth at last But to reach the top I've got to stop from Walking backwards down the stairs Trying to get higher How can I get anywheres Walking backwards down the stairs People stop to watch me They’re wondering what I'm doin' What direction I'm pursuing I pretend I'm free But actually I'm Walking backwards down the stairs Trying to get higher, higher How can I get anywheres Walking backwards down the stairs

Ha Ha World 03:24
Ha ha world Every day I used to write you a letter But you never wrote back And you never made me feel any better Always sat in here fretting and getting confused Halfway desperate for a headline of hope in the news When the telephone rang Well I spilled it all over my sweater Oh oh The call is for me and I answer the phone in the kitchen The room was too hot, I forgot I was cooking a chicken It was burning like hell but the stove wasn't on And the voice on the line says the chicken is gone The receiver goes dead and it hums while the plot starts to thicken Oh oh yeah ah-ah-ah-ah-ah Would I have hung up the phone had I known the whole room would start swaying It was instantly cold and I knew why my life wasn't paying I had money and fame but my wealth wasn't wise What good are the coins on a dead man's eyes And the ringing of chimes in my head said it's time to start (pray) praying Yeah Yeah yeah yeah yah oo Badadadidinday oh dah I’ve been sitting here praying and laying up treasures in heaven I was home and the front door was locked when the clock struck eleven I heard the bride outside yell millennium Though the sun was still up the twelfth hour has come (One two three four five six seven) The bible says without a vision the people perish (perish) Shhh ??? [Whispers something]

I don't believe in miracles I know what's real I don't pretend, oh no I don't believe in miracles Or stories with a happy end Life is no one's friend But when we met I felt so free And suddenly I felt a change come over me Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me I don't believe in miracles I've been around I've seen enough, oh no The only way to get along You must be strong You must be tough Life is one big bluff But then you opened up the door And I walked right in and all my fears fell on the floor Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me Oh But then you smiled and suddenly I felt so strange, I felt a change come over me Do you suppose I don't believe in miracles I know what's real I don't pretend, oh no I don't believe in miracles Or stories with a happy end Life is no one's friend Ah-ah But then you opened up the door And I walked right in and all my fears fell on the floor Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me

I was thinking just last Sunday How the world confuses one day With the rest throughout the year And that one day is the day that a child appeared Just a baby in a manger But the room was filled with strangers And a star hung in the sky Oh like an angel On the day that a child appeared Little children please remember Why we celebrate December It's much more than Santa Claus But you're right about the gift and tree A gift of life at Calvary Ooh I was thinking just last Sunday How the world confuses one day With the rest throughout the year Mmm-hmm-mmm And that day is the day that a child appeared

What goes through your mind What goes through your mind You think your life is hell But you've learned to hide it well But when you sleep at night Does it all come back And it’s you who's black inside Oh who you trying to fool When you play it cool You know you have big doubts Of what life's all about And questions fill your head Is God really dead Is there life after we die If you're trying to please the world You're gonna be let down And the sea of people don't care if you live Or if you drown What goes through your mind What goes through your mind The things you think you want They only screw you up You can be good or bad Do what you want to do And it’s up to you to decide Just what goes through your mind girl I think you like being blind girl Look for the truth and you'll find it girl The truth's ahead, you're behind it girl Just what goes through your mind girl I think you like being blind girl Just what goes through your mind girl What goes through your mind [x4, very faintly]

One Way 02:44
One way, one way to heaven Hold your fingers high One way, free and forgiven Children of the sky Two roads diverged in the middle of my life I heard the poet say I took the one less travelled by And that’s made the difference Every night and every day, I say One way, one way to heaven Hold up high your hand Follow, free and forgiven Children of the lamb In my youth I knew the truth But I spent many years just sitting on the wrong track Now that I’m older I’m bolder And it’s high time I should be getting back And that’s a fact One way, one way to heaven Hold up high your hand Follow, free and forgiven Children of the lamb There’s only one way to heaven Look inside you He will guide you One way, one way to heaven Hold up high your hand Follow, free and forgiven Children of the lamb

This world's in trouble, you know it’s true But who has the answers to help us get through We look to our leaders, they politely yawn The press gives coverage and the world goes on This song won't stop the world from going round ‘Cause a song can't stop the world from being unsound But it might change a heart, change a heart or two No it can't stop the world, but it might stop you The radio's blasting, the music's loud A message is given to a face in the crowd By a prophet of music, a poet of song The truth is spoken and the world goes on A song can’t stop the world from goin’ round A song won’t stop the world from being unsound But it might change a heart, change a heart or two No it can't stop the world, but it might stop you No it can't stop the world, but it might stop you

How I love to dance [Spoken] I had the rhythm of living in my shoes Along come the rhythm and blues The blues caught up and put me in a trance And my shoes refused to dance dance dance dance wo oh oh My life began to slip and slide And I had no hope, no place to hide I borrowed a gun, I had nothing to lose I figured it's time to hang up my shoes He came along that very day He asked me why I walk this way My soles half worn and my tongue hung about And with a broken laces I'm tripping out, out He said to me, get up and walk And I said why don't we sit down and talk He said how 'bout a new soul I said huh, no chance, I'm gonna put these shoes in an ambulance Be-u-bap, be-u-bap, woo Ba-da-da ba-ba-ba-ba na-na-na-na ba-ba-oh La-la-ba ra-pa-pa ba-ra-pa-ba–pa ba-pa-ba-pa Woo-ah Aah-ah-ah-ah-ah How I love to dance He reached right out and touched my toes Everybody knows how the rest of the story goes If you're steppin' through life then my appeal Is to follow in his footsteps and get your soles reheeled And if you wanna give your feet a treat Then get ready to walk down that golden street But be careful how you use your shoes And don't waste your time on the rhythm and blues Ow He turns blue shoes white He turns blue shoes white He turns blue blue blue shoes white He turns blue shoes white Ba da ba ba ba Ba da ba ba ba a-ha ah ha Thank you [Spoken]

In the midst of the war he offered us peace He came like a lover from out of the east With the face of an angel and the heart of a beast His intentions were six sixty six He walked up to the temple with gold in his hand And he bought off the priest and propositioned the land And the world was his harlot and laid in the sand While the band played six sixty six La la na, la la na, na na la, na na na Na na na, na na, na na na, na na na Na na na, na na la, la na na, la la la Na na na, na na na, na na na We served at his table and slept on the floor But he starved us and beat us and nailed us to the door Well I'm ready to die, I can't take any more And I'm sick of his lies and his tricks He told us he loved us but that was a lie There was blood in his pockets and death in his eye Well my number is up and I'm willing to die If the band will play six If the band will play six sixty If the band will play six sixty six La la la [x15]

Darkness can't hide much longer The spirit is getting stronger You keep the dance halls humming But the end of the age is coming I've searched all around the world to find a grain of truth I've opened the mouth of love and found a wisdom tooth Maybe you think I'm plastic But your situation's drastic I'm glad my faith is stronger This world won't last much longer I've searched all around the world to find a place of peace I've sat in the shade of God and watched the joy increase Na na na na na na Ooh ooh ooh ooh Maybe you think I'm plastic But your situation's drastic This time you can't restrain me Though in the past you've slain me Maybe you think I'm wrong now But this is my only song now I've searched all around the world to find a grain of truth I've opened the mouth of love and found a wisdom tooth Yes I've searched all around the world to find a place of peace I've sat in the shade of God and watched the joy increase Well I've searched all around the world to find a grain of truth And I've opened the mouth of love and I found a wisdom tooth Yes I've searched all around the world to find a place of peace And I've sat in the shade of God and I’ve watched the joy increase I said I've searched all around the world to find a grain of truth I've opened the mouth of love and found a wisdom tooth

[Spoken] [A song by Gentle Faith plays] For every successful and familiar name recording Jesus rock there are five groups singing religious music anywhere they can. Groups with such names as "The Children of Light", "Sea of Galilee" or the "JC Power Outlet". The group here is called "Gentle Faith." They've given up their old ways for the Jesus Movement and they say their main contribution is their music. [Gentle Faith song ends] One young man, Larry Norman, gave up a successful recording career to devote his time and his talent to religion. Larry Norman still records and he still performs, but all for Jesus. The reason I changed from rock 'n' roll music to Jesus music. It... rock 'n' roll music didn't make me happy, didn't, you know, validate any of my friends' happiness. It didn't make ’em happy. We're all looking for something to make, ah, us real, to bring something into focus. Music and art and drugs and all of those things just ended up being escapes. It didn't bring any truth that we could hold onto, so I, I found Jesus with the baptism of the Holy Spirit. That's what changed me concretely. The day that happened, that‘s when I left the group. We had a hit record. It was on its way toward a million seller and the album came out, and the day the album came out that’s when I left the group 'cause I had what I wanted, Jesus. Were you religious before? I was religious but I don't think Jesus is religion. People make up a religion about him. He's more than a religion. How do you mean more? He's real. Religion's not real. To me religion is all based on superstition and guilt an', and ritual. Jesus isn't. Explain that to me. Well I don't have to go to a church every day, I go to church in my heart. I don't have to, to kneel or, or bow. My spirit has been humbled and bowed. Ah, I'm not afraid of, of, of approval from the, the preachers or the, the members of the church. I just, I have to be right before God and I have to read my bible and ah, to, to stay informed on, on who man is and who God is. You say Jesus is real. You're talking, I gather the philosophy that we know from the bible. That's, that's, that's real to you? The philos.. , the whole bible is real to me. To me, it's all accurate. I didn't used to think that way. I was too intellectual. Now I find myself being, my mind is cleared up even more than when I thought I was intellectual. And it all makes sense.

[Spoken] We take a lot of things lightly in America. Like the bible, like baptism. Did you know that people in communist countries treasure their bibles? The bibles are so rare. They rip out pages and memorize them and exchange them with other believers. Memorize as much as they can. They put it in their hearts, God's words, because they can't always go to the shop an’ pick up God’s word. And baptism really means something to them. Even in countries that aren't communist, like in India. To be baptized really means something. Over here we may accept Jesus and take two or three years to get baptized, but over there, when a person believes he wants to be baptized, it means something to him, and it really costs him too. Once a person is baptized in India, his family denounces him and will not have anything to do with him. The family considers him dead. It's going to happen in the United States, the same thing that's happening in oppressed countries. A lot of our churches are going to be closed down and a lot of us are going to be arrested and killed. I know you can't believe it, but it's true. There's a man named Watchman Nee, in China. You've read his books, haven't you? Some of you? Well, they put him in prison because he was con, you know, his work was converting so many people. And his books continued to come out although he was under lock and key, and they didn't know how he was still writing books. But it turned out that he had converted the guards and they were smuggling out his, his books. And so they killed the guards, and his books continued to come. He had converted the other guards. So they killed those guards. While not wishing to oppress christianity because that would make it grow up stronger. I mean you take a seed and lay it on top of upon the ground with no oppression and it’ll just lay there dormant, but you plant it in the ground and cover it up with dirt, you try to bury it, and it’ll grow. And the holy spirit's sure to water it. Well not wishing to oppress christianity but not wishing to encourage it either, they didn’t kill Watchman Nee. But they cut off his arms. And his books still continued to come. You can't oppress God’s spirit. You can't lock it up. It will not stay locked up. And I'm, I'm not particularly afraid of, of, of what's going to happen in the United States. I'm glad in a way because it's going to force a lot of people to make a choice and not be so casual. And when you don't have the church to go to, you’re going to wish you had fellowship. And those of you who are christians are really going to treasure your christianity more and it's going to mean something to you and it's going to work more for you because you’re going to commit yourself to it more. And you'll start tearing out pages from your bible. It's already happening here. It's already happening in very polite forms. Our money may say "In God we trust." It's already against the law to pray in school. And it's happening already right here. And maybe some of you have been persecuted in very polite ways. I have, and my sister has and her husband has. And my friends have been put in jail for preaching on the streets. An' maybe it hasn't happened to you. You can, you cannot hold church in un-zoned area. And some of my friends have had their bible studies busted. And in some neighborhoods, the neighbors have gotten together and signed a paper saying they don't want those meetings in their neighborhood. I'm really glad there’s bible studies in houses. I'm really glad that every day is Sunday to a lot of kids now. I'm not afraid of the Russians coming or the Chinese or the world council of churches if that's gonna be our enemies too. Let them come. I'm not afraid of the lions. Let ‘em eat me. They can't swallow my soul. They can't touch us. They can't get us. We've been bought with a price and nobody's got enough money or enough force to buy us back. They can't touch you. And when they come you just pray for them, and when they lead you away you just sing glory to God. And when they shoot you you just smile.

[Spoken] It bothers me that in the movies they never show Jesus really, you know, the right way. Every movie I’ve seen he walks around like, you know, he's had his nails done or something. He never looks at anybody. He's always looking ahead of him you know. I guess he's reading the script card or something. I saw one movie, it was like, you know, superstar cast. It, all the good actors were in it. You know, I doubt they read the bible but they all had their scripts memorized. Hmm, have you read the bible? No, but I’ve seen the movie. All these people. John Wayne was a centurion in one of the movies. You know, this is the man who was in charge of a hundred soldiers. He stood at the foot of the cross and he, when Jesus died, in the bible it says that the man looked up and knew that this was God's son. So they picked John Wayne to play him. And hon, honest, I can just imagine the, the director, it comes John's time and they go [clicks tongue], alright, John, it’s rolling. Surely this was the son o' God. Can you see a bunch of people sitting around the table at the last supper, you know, Cary Grant and ah, Walter Brennan? And Jesus says do this in remembrance of me and, and Walter Brennan is going hey beat it, beat it. Nice bread.

Ah ha-ah. Uh, this is, uh, I have to have it turned up louder if I’m going to sing rock and roll Aow, ow, aw, ow. Who's in charge of the microphones? Uh, no, I can adjust it, I just want it louder [Spoken] Now when you know a pretty story you don't let it go unsaid You tell it to your children as you tuck them into bed And when you know a wonderful secret You tell it to your friends Tell them that a life time filled with Jesus is like a street that never ends, alright Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation And let your laughter fill the air Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation And tell the people everywhere Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation To every man and every nation Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation And let the people know that Jesus cares And that's the way it goes. Those of you who have English backgrounds can appreciate the alliteration of sing that sweet sweet song of salvation. And this is a sing-along and those of you with lisps I don't really, uh. So if you'll sing this part [Spoken] Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation Then I will sing the next part [Spoken] Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation La, la, la, la, la, la, la Sing that sweet sweet Now you men can drop out at this part if you want. You women can hold your head high. We'll try it once. Are you ready? [Spoken] One, two, three Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation And let the duh da da Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation Ooh-ooh Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation Da da dan da ba Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation Yeah, that was good. Alright, are you ready? Are you on your own? Youth workers and leaders? [Spoken] Alright, one, two, three (Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation) Sing it like you mean it And let your laughter fill the air Sing that sweet sweet (song of salvation) And tell the people everywhere (Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation) Some, I know some of you have mnemonic devices that you've learned as you, you know, have taught, ah. Mnemonic means things, visual things or physical things that help you understand what's going on. Like sometimes a teacher will draw on the blackboard as he lectures to his class so that the pupils will visualize what’s going on or sometimes a teacher will take a ruler and hit one of the students. So if I get you physically involved I know your minds are, well, physically... Why don't we clap? I'll give you a pattern. This is rock and roll. Rock and roll as you know, if you're an adult, means repetitious. So that, that's why the words are the same all throughout the song. Now if I give you a pattern it will be, uh, it will have a beat you know. It’ll be, what is that word that man who thinks rock and roll's of the devil used, uh, syncopation. Syncopation. I don't use words like that. Syncopation. Well this is rock and roll so we'll syncopate it so you'll all know which side of the pearly gates it's on [Spoken] We'll do it like this [Spoken] Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation [clap-clap] and let your laughter laugh They missed it. It's only twice [Spoken] Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation [clap-clap] That was good. Now the second section of tables. You can do the same thing as the first section. Those of you who are uptight about clapping for a religious, you know, song or experience, ah, you can think of it as praying, but ju' rapidly. And the waitresses and the cooks can join in. I know you haven't, you know, paid the price of the convention here, and you don't have meal tickets but you’re welcome, to join in [Spoken] Sing that sweet (sweet song of salvation) come on, come on Let your laughter fill the air Sing that sweet (sweet song of salvation) [clap-clap] Tell the people everywhere Sing that sweet (sweet song of salvation) [clap-clap] To every man and every nation Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation And let the people know that Jesus cares Ah If only your youth groups could see you right now [Spoken] Now look around you as you sing it There are people everywhere And to those who stop to listen This sweet song becomes a prayer 'Cause when you know a wonderful secret You tell it to your friends Go on and tell them that a lifetime filled with you know who Is like a street that never ends Alright, it's your turn Sing that (sweet sweet song of salvation) Sing it like you mean it And let your laughter fill the air Sing that sweet (sweet) sweet (song of salvation) song of salvation Tell the people everywhere Sing that sweet sweet song of sal(vation) whoo Every man in every nation Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation And let the people know that Jesus cares You've got to let the people know that Jesus cares He really does, he died for all of them to set them free from sin You let the people know that Jesus cares Sit around tables, sit in chairs but you've got to let the people know that Jesus cares Go away from here, get on a plane, go back home and do your thing Be a leader But don't set up followers Don't call yourself a leader Jesus is the leader You're a follower too You may be in front of some other people in line But you’re not the leader, you're a follower There are no leaders, rock and roll There are no leaders but the Lord Don't set yourself up as an example Kids will look to you and say, oh, if I could only be as good as him If they only knew Woo-oo-oo -oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooh Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation [clap-clap] And let your laughter fill the air Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation, wa-a-a-ah And let the people, let 'em know everywhere Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation To president Nixon and the United Nations Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation Let the peop' Sing that sweet sweet song of (salvation) [clap-clap] Is that because I mentioned the president, and eh [Spoken] Alright, the last time [Spoken] Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation [clap-clap] You can make up your own words this time Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation [clap-clap] They don't necessarily have to rhyme Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation [clap-clap] Just make sure it's all in time Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation [clap-clap] Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation [clap-clap] Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation [clap-clap] Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation [clap-clap] Let the people know that Jesus cares Whoo-ah ooh-ah

He's an unidentified flying object You will see him in the air He's an unidentified flying object You will drop your hands and stare You will be afraid to tell your neighbours They might think that it's not true But when you open up the morning papers You will know they've seen it too He will come back like he promised With the price already paid He will call out for his followers And take them all away He's an unidentified flying object He will sweep down from the sky He's an unidentified flying object Some will sleep, but will not die He's an unidentified flying object Coming back to take you home He's an unidentified flying object He will roll away your stone And if there's life on other planets Then I'm sure that he must know And he's been there once already And has died to save their souls He's an unidentified flying object You will see him in the air He's an unidentified flying object You will drop your hands and stare He's an unidentified flying object Coming back to take you home He's an unidentified flying object He will roll away your stone

about

This Bandcamp release is a 'copy' of the 2014 (and 2018) CD releases, which are described as follows on www.larrynorman.com:

"This 34 song, 2 CD set has been re-mastered from available source recordings to sound better than any previously released CD versions. It includes bonus tracks not on the original LP including a rare live version of "Sweet Song of Salvation" previously only available on a long out-of-print compilation record called Jesus Sound Explo '72.

About the album: In early 1972 One Way Records released Bootleg, a double album retrospective covering the previous four years of Norman's career compiled from demonstration recordings made while at Capitol Records, private recordings from his friends, and various interviews and live performances. It was deliberately recorded to sound like an unauthorized bootleg recording to ensure reception by street people. who were wary of slick major label products."
