Took a plane to Minnesota to see my lady love The clouds were far below me and the sky was high above And when the captain called the flight time Well my heart cried out this song It's still an hour till arrival And that's an hour much too long Fly Fly Fly My baby gets me high I've spent too much time in taxicabs Please don't ask me why Fly Fly Fly Like an eagle in the sky And with a lot of love a little help from above We'll be together till we die We'll honeymoon in Haifa and have lunch in Galilee We'll hitchhike up through Switzerland and drop in at L'Abri We'll spend our winters in Laguna And our summers on the farm And spend the rest of life in heaven Locked in each other's arms Fly Fly Fly Like an eagle in the sky And with a lot of love a little help from above We'll be together till we die And then after Fly Fly Fly My baby gets me high Fly Fly Fly Like an eagle in the sky [x2] Fly Fly Fly You know my baby gets me high I've been too much time just hanging round the airport Please don't ask me why Fly Fly Fly You know my baby gets me high I've been too much time in taxicabs Please don't ask me why Fly Fly Fly Like an eagle in the sky And with a lot of love a little help from above We'll be together till we die Fly Fly Fly You know my baby gets me high I've been too much time just hanging round the airport Please don't ask me why Fly Fly Fly Seven forty seven... [At this point the music continues, but faded as Larry says the following: Thank you. I'm Larry Norman and you're listening to Here's To Veterans. That was a song I recorded in England, eh, this last year with a lot of my friends. It's called Meet Me At The Airport and it's about touring and travelling, and love. Now it's time for a few words from the Veterans Administration and then we'll be right back.] ...halfway to heaven A lot of love a little help from above We'll be together till we die Fly Fly Fly You know my baby gets me high I've been too much time in taxicabs Please don't ask me why Fly Fly Fly

[Spoken] Many of you have heard recently about sickle cell anemia, yet medical science knows very little about this disease. This much is known; it's a disease of the blood, it strikes mostly blacks, it is painful, and there is no known cure. That's about all we know about it. Veterans Administration hospitals are now making an all out effort to find out what causes the disease and to develop a treatment for it The name sickle cell comes from the fact that in perfectly formed red blood cells are shaped like grass cutting sickles. Other parts of the body are affected too and many blacks needlessly die at a young age because of this disease. There are a few ways to recognise symptoms of sickle cell anaemia but unfortunately many times there are no symptoms at all and the tragedy is that the disease is passed on from parent to child. I'll be back in a few minutes to tell you more about the VA's efforts to combat sickle cell anemia. But first let's hear again from Larry Norman

Thank you very much. Here's a song off of my new album. It's about big cities and I guess even about the way we feel in small cities in this day and age. It's called Lonely By Myself [Spoken] If I could find someone who really cared for me Someone to share my love and keep me company If I could find someone I'd let them take control And in exchange for love I'd give my very soul It's such a lonely life I almost cry each night 'Cause fate has put me fate has put me on the shelf I get so lonely so lonely by myself I get so lonely so lonely So lonely by myself Who can I turn to, is there anybody there Doesn't anybody care Oooooooh, doesn't anybody listen Doesn't anybody care

[Spoken] Larry Norman will be back with another new song, but earlier I was talking about sickle cell anemia, painful, sometimes fatal disease that attacks generation after generation of blacks. As I mentioned earlier, there are some known symptoms like persistent back pain or aching joints of the legs and arms. Some victims suffer from pain and fever. This lowers resistance to other infections and can indirectly cause death A blood test is all you need to find out if you have sickle cell anemia. This is especially important before you begin raising a family, because if you carry the trait your children will probably inherit the disease from you. The VA program includes counselling to parents who have the sickle cell trait. If you're a black veteran, go to your nearest Veterans Administration hospital or out patient clinic for an examination soon Now here's Larry Norman

This is a song about how people are very independent in their lives, how they don't need anyone, or they try not to need too many people. And, it's really a look at a person that, that lives in a world of their own. It's called She's A Dancer [Spoken] She's a dancer in the garden And she dances with the flowers In the early morning hours When the wind shifts and the fog drifts She's a dancer She's a dancer and she knows it Everywhere she goes she shows it Condescending not pretending No regretting Nor forgetting She's a dancer And on my early morning walks I often find her I sit pretending that I'm looking at the paper And when people stop to watch her She pretends she doesn't see them Doesn't need them and where she goes There the wind blows Though it's only with the flowers that she dances And on my early morning walks I often find her I sit pretending that I'm looking at the paper

This is Larry Norman, and the music you're hearing today is from my new album So Long Ago The Garden. It's on MGM and it's about a lot of different things in life. It's an album that covers a lot of personal territory, and this next song is called Soul Survivor [Spoken] I'm the soul survivor of this tragedy Oh yes I need somebody's sympathy Don't leave me here alone don't let me be The soul survivor of this tragedy My life was good when she was hanging round My love was flying so high and free But when she left my dreams came tumbling down Now I'm the soul survivor of this tragedy I'm the soul survivor of this tragedy Oh yes I need somebody's sympathy Don't leave me here alone don't let me be The soul survivor of this tragedy I'm trying so hard to forget my pain And leave my past behind But when your life is suddenly filled with rain You keep remembering how the sun used to shine And I can't stand the loneliness the constant emptiness Why has unhappiness come into my life I spend my mornings waking and thinking And cry my evenings late into the night I never knew that things could go so wrong Until this happened to me (and I'm telling you) If you're in love you better hold on strong Or be the soul survivor of this tragedy I'm the soul survivor of this tragedy Thanks Larry Norman for your tribute to America's veterans. This radio station has contributed broadcast time in the public interest to this this program, transcribed to the Veterans Administration in cooperation with the American Federation of Musicians. They all join me in saying here's to veterans [Spoken over background music]

about

Whilst Larry did eventually release a recording of this on CDR as part of the Illegal Noise series, it is not actually a Larry Norman release. "Here's To Veterans" was a series of radio broadcasts produced on vinyl by the Veterans Administration. Most if not all featured one artist on side A and another on side B. The A side of this disc, program 1428, features Judi Pulver. This is a mono recording, and the songs are edited versions of those on the MGM release of So Long Ago The Garden.

This Bandcamp release is a copy of the Illegal Noise CDR, which was itself copied from a fan made vinyl transfer. Here it has been run through de-click and de-hum processing.
