Lonely Boy 00:54
I'm in the middle of an island I'm in the middle of a sea I'm staying here 'cause there's no place left for me Yay yay yay I'm a lonely boy in a lonely world There's no place left for me I've been everywhere in the world there is I've sailed the seven seas But when I return it's always the same No one's waiting for me I'm a lonely boy in a lonely world So now I'll sail the seas once more Now I'll sail the seas

I was born about eighteen years ago in a little wooden shack I was born about eighteen years ago on the wrong side of the tracks I never knew my father and I never had a home Well I don't know where I came from and I don't know where I'm going I was born to be unlucky from my shoulders to my shoes And I guess I'm stuck with my unlucky blues When I was just a young boy I was raised on beans and trout And on my seventh birthday, well my mama she kicked me out They say I'm good for nothing, no one treats me kind I don't care 'cause pretty soon I'm gonna leave this world behind I was born to be unlucky from my shoulders to my shoes And I guess I'm stuck with my unlucky blues I jumped into the river to try to put myself away A man jumped in and saved me, he spoiled a perfect day He dragged me to the river's edge, he said he knew I had a need Then he pulled out a soggy bible and that man began to read Well he told me things I did not know, I'm glad I did not die 'Cause he told me God's my father and my real home is in the sky And I said [Instrumental] He said I'd done a very foolish thing to try to drown myself and die And I told him I was glad he happened to be passing by He said God would forgive me, so I repented of my sin Then he said I must be baptised and he threw me in again Aww I was born to be unlucky from my shoulders to my shoes I thought I must be stuck with these unlucky blues Aww yeaow My life has changed in many ways, I'm such a different man Well I know now who my father is and I know just where I stand With one foot up in heaven and one foot on the ground I travel through this world of ours, I try to spread God's word around I was born to be unlucky, I knowed it, from my shoulders to my shoes But I came unstuck from my unlucky blues Yeaow maybe you can too Alright woo And this is just the beginning

Moses tending sheep in the fields one day When he thought he heard a burning scrub-brush say Gotta free your people From the Pharaoh's hand Gotta take 'em all to the promised land Moses knew that God was talking to him So he set off to Egypt with a vigor and vim And Moses bugged the Pharaoh, he bugged him And he bugged him 'Till he got his people freed He used real bugs Yes indeed, ow ow He got his people freed Ow ow ow ow [x2] Moses on the banks of the wide Red Sea He stuck out a stick and one two three The water rolled back And the people walked down Everybody knew they wouldn't drown Pharaoh told his army to bring 'em all back An' here come the chariots, clickety clack Why Moses took his stick And he closed up the water An' the 'Gyptians all took a bath Ow ow ow ow What a laugh Ow they all took a bath Ow ow ow [cough] ow Ow ow ow ow Dirty 'Gyptians Grab my foot, take my hand Lead me on to the promised land Milk and honey, milk and honey Milk and honey, milk and honey Me and all my people is here So keep on sending manna From the atmosphere Milk and honey, milk and honey Milk and honey, milk and honey After forty long years in the wilderness They finally saw their potential metropolis They all gave thanks And they all praised the Lord Even though it took time he kept his word He grab their foot and he tooken their hand And he brung 'em all over To the promised land But it seems to me like an awful long time to be Looking for a home Ow ow ow ow A mighty long roam, home Looking for a home, a home a home Never borrow money needlessly [cough]

Hard luck and bad news Has followed me from town to town All my life my luck's been down I'm getting so weary I don't have one friend Folks turn their backs when I'm around And where I walk the grass turns brown No one will come near me Hard luck and bad news Hard luck and bad news If you were in my shoes you'd die My life's been lonely I've never heard a kindly word Ugly names is all I've heard And mean is how they treat me Nobody trusts me They blame me for the fires in town Claim that hell is where I'm bound And pray that God will speed me Hard luck and bad news Hard luck and bad news If you were in my shoes you'd die Woo Life's not worth living My sorrow's more than I can say Tomorrow's just another day I hate to see the sun rise Yet maybe someday I'll find a man to call a friend I'll be his friend until the end In loneliness my heart cry Hard luck and bad news Hard luck and bad news If you were in my shoes you'd die [x2]

Walking backwards down the stairs Trying to get higher How can I get anywhere Walking backwards down the stairs Watching life elude me Slipping through my grasp Oh I know the truth at last But to reach the top I've got to stop from Walking backwards down the stairs Trying to get higher How can I get anywhere Walking backwards down the stairs People stop to watch me Wonder what I'm doing What direction I'm pursuing I pretend I'm free but actually I'm Walking backwards down the stairs Trying to get higher, higher How can I get anywhere Walking backwards down the stairs

Pardon Me 02:56
Pardon me Kissing you like I'm afraid But I know I'm being played with And you'll leave me when you get the chance Off you'll go In the darkness of the night Like a bird in freedom's flight You're thinking only of deliverance Close your eyes And pretend that you are me See how empty it can be Making love if love's not really there Watch me go Watch me walk away alone As your clothing comes undone And you pull the ribbons from your hair Pardon me

I'm the soul survivor of this tragedy Oh yes I need somebody's sympathy Don't leave me here alone, don't let me be The soul survivor of this tragedy My life was good when she was hanging round My love was flying so high and free But when she left my dreams came tumbling down Now I'm the soul survivor of this tragedy I'm the soul survivor of this tragedy Oh yes I need somebody's sympathy Don't leave me here alone, don't let me be The soul survivor of this tragedy I'm trying so hard to forget my pain And leave my past behind But when your life is suddenly filled with rain You keep remembering how the sun used to shine And I can't stand the loneliness, the constant emptiness Why has unhappiness ah-come into my life I spend my mornings waking and thinking And cry my evenings late into the night I never knew that things could go so wrong Until this happened to me, and I'm telling you If you're in love you better hold on strong Or be the soul survivor of this tragedy I'm the soul survivor of this tragedy (Soul survivor, soul survivor) Oh yes I need somebody's sympathy (Ooh ooh ooh ooh) Don't leave me here alone, don't let me be (Soul survivor, soul survivor) The soul survivor of this tragedy I'm the soul survivor of this tragedy (Soul survivor, soul survivor) (Yes I am) Oh yes I need somebody's (I don't want nobody's sympathy) sympathy (Ooh ooh ooh ooh) Don't leave me here alone don't let me be (Soul survivor soul, survivor) The soul survivor of this tragedy I'm the soul survivor of this tragedy (Ah yeah yeah yeah) (Soul survivor, soul survivor) Oh yes I need somebody's sympathy (Ooh ooh ooh ooh)

I don't believe in miracles I know what's real, I don't pretend I don't believe in miracles Or stories with a happy end Life is no one's friend But when we met I felt so free And suddenly I felt a change come over me Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me I don't believe in miracles I've been around, I've seen enough The only way to get along you must be strong You must be tough Life is one big bluff But then you opened up the door An' I walked right in and all my fears fell on the floor Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me Pa [x35] But then you opened up the door An' I walked right in and all my fears fell on the floor Do you suppose I don't believe in miracles I know what's real, I don't pretend I don't believe in miracles Or stories with a happy end Life is no one's friend But then we met and suddenly I felt so strange I felt a change come over me Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me

Backstage, I cross the middle ground Curtains up and house lights down I sing love songs and pass myself around But afterwards Some people say they thought I put them down They feel so bad It does not matter what I say I hope tomorrow they have a better day They seem so trapped They need release They need your strong love and strange peace Reporters question me, is this a new direction for the young How lamb like their faces How snake like their tongues They quote me perfectly Then rewrite every word I speak And go away convinced we're all some new kind of freaks I feel so good It does not matter what they say Ah ha ha ha ha ha I hope tomorrow they have a better day We're all so trapped We need release We need your strong love and strange peace We need your strong love and strange peace We need your strong love and strange peace

Ha Ha World 03:22
Ha ha world Every day I used to write you a letter But you never wrote back And you never made me feel any better Always sitting here Fretting and getting confused Halfway desperate For a headline of hope in the news When the telephone rang I spilled it all over my sweater Oh yeah The call was for me And I answered the phone in the kitchen (Ha ha world, ha ha world) But the room was too hot I forgot I was cooking my chicken (Ha ha world, ha ha world) I was burning like hell But the stove wasn't on Then the voice on the line Says the chicken is gone The receiver goes dead and it Hums while the plot starts to thicken Oh oh yeah oh Would I have hung up the phone had I known The whole room would start swaying (Ha ha world, ha ha world) I was instantly cold And I knew why my life wasn't paying (Ha ha world, ha ha world) I had money and fame But my wealth wasn't wise What good are the coins on a dead man's eyes And the ringing of chimes in my head Said it's time to start praying Oh oh yeah oh I’ve been sitting here praying And laying up treasures in heaven (Ha ha world, ha ha world) I was home and the front door was locked When the clock struck eleven (Ha ha world, ha ha world) I heard the bride outside yell millennium Though the sun was still up The twelfth hour has come The bible says Without a vision the people perish

Ah forget your hexagram, you'll soon feel fine Stop looking at the stars You don't live under the signs Don't mess with gypsies Or have your fortune read Keep the table on the floor And don't you listen to the dead You can't hitchhike your way to heaven The devil's closed the roads You live once and you die once with no Re-incarnate episodes You can't hitchhike to heaven Or get there by just being good The rules were set down long ago When the spikes went in the wood OK now [Very faintly] Oh Heaven is in your mind When love is in your heart Maybe you'll find the way But first you have to start Forget your hexagram, you'll soon feel fine Stop looking at the stars You don't live under the signs Don't mess with gypsies Or have your fortune read Keep your table on the floor And don't you listen to the dead You can't hitchhike your way to heaven The devil's closed the roads You live once and you die once with no Re-incarnate episodes You can't hitchhike to heaven Or get there by just being good The rules were set down long ago When the spikes went in the wood

about

Instigator collected the very best songs written in the 50s and the 60s and contained some music which had never been heard before. Perhaps the most famous track which had never been released is "Butterfly". But "Kulderachna" and others are also included, making this a truly "best of" collection of recordings.

The preceding paragraph is how this title, volume one of the Essential series, was described when released in 2003. Butterfly and Kulderachna had never been released previously - but note they are included on the Bandcamp release of So Long Ago The Garden. The remaining "never been heard before" tracks are alternate mixes and edits.
