Sickle Cell Anemia Spot#1

from Here's To Veterans by Larry Norman

lyrics

[Spoken]

Many of you have heard recently about sickle cell anemia, yet medical science knows very little about this disease. This much is known; it's a disease of the blood, it strikes mostly blacks, it is painful, and there is no known cure. That's about all we know about it. Veterans Administration hospitals are now making an all out effort to find out what causes the disease and to develop a treatment for it

The name sickle cell comes from the fact that in perfectly formed red blood cells are shaped like grass cutting sickles. Other parts of the body are affected too and many blacks needlessly die at a young age because of this disease. There are a few ways to recognise symptoms of sickle cell anaemia but unfortunately many times there are no symptoms at all and the tragedy is that the disease is passed on from parent to child. I'll be back in a few minutes to tell you more about the VA's efforts to combat sickle cell anemia. But first let's hear again from Larry Norman
