Life was filled with guns and war And everyone got trampled on the floor I wish we'd all been ready Children died, the days grew cold A piece of bread could buy a bag of gold I wish we'd all been ready There's no time to change your mind The son has come and you've been left behind A man and wife asleep in bed She hears a noise and turns her head He's gone I wish we'd all been ready Two men walking up a hill One disappears and one's left standing still I wish we'd all been ready There's no time to change your mind The son has come and you've been left behind La la la la la la la La la la la la la la la la la la la la Life was filled with guns and war And everyone got trampled on the floor I wish we'd all been ready Children died, the days grew cold A piece of bread could buy a bag of gold I wish we'd all been ready There's no time to change your mind How could you have been so blind The father spoke the demons dined The son has come and you've been left behind You've been left behind [x2]

If I could find someone who really cared for me Someone to share my love and keep me company If I could find someone, I'd let them take control And in exchange for love I'd give my very soul It's such a lonely life, I almost cry each night 'Cause fate has put me on the shelf I get so lonely, so lonely by myself If I could find someone who really loved me right They'd make my life complete, they'd make my soul shine bright I've looked around the world, I've walked down every street Still I can't find no one to give me what I need It's such a lonely life, I almost cry each night 'Cause fate has put me, fate has put me on the shelf I get so lonely, so lonely by myself I get so lonely, so lonely So lonely by myself Who can I turn to, is there anybody there Doesn't anybody care Oo-ooh, doesn't anybody listen Doesn't anybody care

He's an unidentified flying object You will see him in the air He's an unidentified flying object And you will drop your hands and stare You will be afraid to tell your neighbors They might think that it's not true But when you open up the morning papers You will know they've seen it too He will come back like he promised With the price already paid He will gather up his followers And take them all away He's an unidentified flying object He will sweep down from the sky He's an unidentified flying object And some will sleep but will not die He's an unidentified flying object Coming back to take you home He's an unidentified flying object He will roll away your stone And if there's life on other planets Then I'm sure that he must know And he's been there once already And has died to save their souls He's an unidentified flying object You will see him in the air He's an unidentified flying object And you will drop your hands and stare Well he's an unidentified flying object Coming back to take you home He's an unidentified flying object He will roll away your stone Hi-ya-ah-wa-waoh wo-oh-oh-ah-woh

In the midst of the war he offered us peace He came like a lover from out of the east With the face of an angel and the heart of a beast His intentions were six sixty six He walked up to the temple with gold in his hand And he bought off the priests and propositioned the land And the world was his harlot and laid in the sand While the band played six sixty six We served at his table and slept on the floor But he starved us and beat us, and nailed us to the door Well I'm ready to die, I can't take any more And I'm sick of his lies and his tricks He told us he loved us but that was a lie There was blood in his pockets and death in his eyes Well my number is up and I'm willing to die If the band will play six si... If the band will play six sixty si... If the band will play six sixty six

I want the people to know That he saved my soul But I still like to listen to the radio They say rock and roll is wrong We'll give you one more chance I say I feel so good I gotta get up and dance I know what's right, I know what's wrong I don't confuse it All I'm really trying to say is Why should the devil have all the good music An’ I feel good every day Because Jesus is the rock and he rolled my blues away They say to cut my hair They're driving me insane I grew it out long to make room for my brain But sometimes people don't understand What's a good boy doing in a rock and roll band There's nothing wrong with playing blues licks Well if you've got a reason, tell me to my face Why should the devil have all the good music There's nothing wrong with what I play, aaaah Jesus is the rock and he rolled my blues away Allright I ain't knocking the hymns Just give me a song that has a beat I ain't knocking the hymns Just give me a song that moves my feet I don't like none of those funeral marches I ain't dead yet Wow Jesus told the truth An’ Jesus showed the way There's one more thing I'd like to say They nailed him to the cross And they laid him in the ground But they shoulda known you can't keep a good man down I feel good every day I don't wanna lose it All I wanna, all I wanna know is Why should the devil have all the good music I been filled, I feel okay Jesus is the rock and he rolled my blues Ah Jesus is the rock and he rolled my blues Ah Jesus is the rock and he rolled my blues away, yeah

I was born and raised an orphan In a land that once was free In a land that poured its love out on the moon And I grew up in the shadows Of your silos filled with grain But you never helped to fill my empty spoon And when I was ten you murdered law With courtroom politics And you learned to make a lie sound just like truth But I know you better now And I don't fall for all your tricks And you've lost the one advantage of my youth You kill a black man at midnight Just for talking to your daughter Then you make his wife your mistress And you leave her without water And the sheet you wear upon your face Is the sheet your children sleep on And at every meal you say a prayer You don't believe but still you keep on And your money says in God we trust But it's against the law to pray in school You say we beat the Russians to the moon And I say you starved your children to do it You are far across the ocean In a war that's not your own And while you're winning theirs You're gonna lose the one at home Do you really think the only way To bring about the peace Is to sacrifice your children And kill all your enemies The politicians all make speeches While the news men all take notes And they exaggerate the issues As they shove it down our throats Is it really up to them Whether this country sinks or floats Well I wonder who would lead us If none of us would vote Hmm Well my phone is tapped and my lips are chapped From whispering through the fence You know every move I make Or is that just coincidence Will you try to make my way of life A little less like jail If I promise to make tapes and slides And send them through the mail And your money says in God we trust But it's against the law to pray in school You say we beat the Russians to the moon And I say you starved your children to do it You say all men are equal, all men are brothers Then why are the rich more equal than others Don't ask me for the answers, I've only got one That a man leaves his darkness when he follows the son

Alice is a drag queen Bowie's somewhere in between Other bands are looking mean Me, I'm trying to stay clean I don't dig the radio I hate what the charts pick Rock and roll may not be dead But it's getting sick All over the world disc jockeys talk the same And every town I play is like the one from where I came The Rolling Stones are millionaires Flower children pallbearers Beatles said all you need is love And then they broke up Jimi took an overdose Janis followed so close The whole music scene and All the bands are pretty comatose This time last year, people didn't wanna hear They looked at Jesus from afar This year he's a superstar Dear John, who's more popular now I've been listening to Paul's records I think he really is dead It's 1973, I wonder who we're gonna see Who's in power now I think I'll turn on the TV The man on the news said China's gonna beat us We shot all our dreamers And there's no one left to lead us We need a solution, we need salvation Let's send some people to the moon And gather information They brought back a big bag of rocks Only cost thirteen billion Must be nice rocks You think it's such a sad thing When you see a fallen king Then you find out they're only princes to begin with And everybody has to choose Whether they'll win or lose Follow God or sing the blues And who they're gonna sin with What a mess the world is in I wonder who began it Don't ask me, I'm only visiting this planet This world is not my home I'm just passing through

I was walking down the road when I bumped into you I was walking down the road when I bumped into you Mmm you stopped me, you touched me, you looked me in the eye I had a feeling that you knew me, I decided you must die I pulled out my Thornton special, I shot you in the head I threw you in the alley way and I left you for dead Uh Then a man with a hat came up from behind The sky went black and I thought I was blind He put his hand inside my jacket and left a million dollar bills He slipped his hand into my pocket and gave me women and thrills And when I turned around to thank him, there was no one there but me And both my hands were filled with sand, I was standing by the sea We had dinner at eight and women at nine The party was great till we ran out of wine There was a knock upon the bedroom door, my knees began to shake And this man came in and melted all the candles on my cake He said I, I've come here to escort you, it's time for you to go He opened up my body and he took away my soul I was running down the road I was running down the road, I was trying to leave An' I saw you all alone in between the thieves And when the lightning flashed I saw somebody hanging from a tree As I turned to walk away I realized it was me I pulled out my Thornton special, I shot me in the head I threw me in the alleyway and I left me for dead Ah down the road Down the road [x3]

Nightmare 05:38
Aaaaah [Yawn like] Last night I had that same old dream, it rocked me in my sleep And left me the impression that the sandman plays for keeps I dreamed I was in concert on the middle of a cloud John Wayne and Billy Graham were giving breath mints to the crowd I fell through a hole in heaven, I left the stage for good And when I landed on the earth I was back in Hollywood The California earthquake, it tore the land in half While San Andreas cleared her throat I heard Psunami laugh The ground began to tremble, the land began to sway And people in the other states, they were glad they'd moved away But suddenly California just floated in the breeze While everything that wasn't sank down into the seas And soon I saw Atlantis rumble and rise high And the great egg of Euphrates came down out of the sky Out stepped Shirley Temple with Guy Kibbee, who was dead And that communist Bill Robinson, whom Shirley called black red They had a marionette of Harpo Marx, they said it was a inside joke But when I honked his horn he came alive and these were the words he spoke With the continents adrift and the sun about to shift Will the ice caps drown us all or will we burn We've polluted what we own, will we reap what we have sown Are we headed for the end or can we turn We've paved the forest, killed the streams Burned the bridges to our dreams The earth is bursting at the seams And in pain of childbirth screams As it gives life to what seems To either be an age that gleams Or simply lays there dying If this goes on will life survive, how can it Out of the grave, oh who will save our planet I said I'm pleased to meet you, I always thought you were a scream He said have you ever thought of having Helen Keller in your dream I said Errol Flynn dropped by but he tried to steal my girl Then she ran off with Ronald Colman, said something about a new world Now I'm stuck with my own cooking, hell I'm lonely can't you see Well he grabbed my leg, he said exactly eighty nine words to me Count 'em Let the proud but dying nation kiss the last generation It's the year of the pill, age of the gland We have landed on the moon but we'll clutter that up soon Our sense of freedom's gotten out of hand We kill our children, swap our wives We've learned to greet a man with knives We swallow pills in fours and fives Our cities look like crumbling hives Man does not live, he just survives Love is a corpse, we sit and watch it harden We left it oh so long ago the garden The strings snapped briskly then went slack, the marionette lay dead While Hoover played with the motorcade the body slumped and bled The man who held the camera disappeared into the crowd I said the hope of youth, fictitious truth lays covered in a shroud Then up walked Elmo Lincoln and he said I beg your pardon But we left it oh so long ago the garden We left it oh so long ago the garden

God Part 2 04:57
Yeah I'll do it right there, get going. Take two [Spoken] [Clears throat] I don't believe in Beatles, I don't believe in rock I don't believe in the primal scream, that's just psychological talk I don't believe in love and peace when it comes with a dovetail joint I don't believe in heroin chic, it's hard to see the point I don't believe in the upheld fist unless your finger points toward heaven Don't wanna talk about six six six but I'm rather fond of seven I don't believe in Reich or Jung or the twisted words of Freud I don't believe in dianetics, operating thetans talk like 'droids I don't believe in politicians who campaign on promises and fear They spend millions to get elected, they get paid sixty thousand a year Do you really wanna put your faith in them when they can't do simple math Are you really gonna follow that kind of person when they're leading you up the path [Coughs] I don't believe in Camelot, great society, new frontier I don't believe that any man here on earth can help us get out of here I've always heard thou shalt not kill, what are we doing in Vietnam Why do we have the electric chair, why did we build the neutron bomb I don't believe in the moonshot, how many billions was that worth If you wanna show up the Russians then just feed all the poor on earth I don't believe in evolution, I didn't slither from the sea Ain't gonna let no palaeontologist make a monkey out of me I don't believe that we're evolving into some smarter kinda race I believe we're going backwards towards some kind of final phase I think this world is running toward hell and that's not the way it needs to be We're sleeping in the light, to tell black from white You've gotta open your eyes to see Lead guitar [Spoken] I don't believe in Mohammed or the dreams of Babylon I don't believe in Buddha or the tao he sat upon I don't believe in Maharishi or the things for which he says he stood I don't believe what Confuscious say but his cookies are pretty good I don't believe you can pray to Mary 'cause she's sleeping in the ground And I don't believe you'll see Jesus on the cross the next time he comes around Ow-now-now-thou-nah Wa-ow pow pow pow pow Pa-ow pow pow pow pa-ow Pa-ow pa-ow Well I don't believe that education is the path to enlightenment I don't believe that the rights of man are represented by the government And I don't believe the real voice of God can be heard clearly in American church If you wanna find the truth get on your knees, start praying, baby it's a life-long search I don't believe I can explain myself by trying to say all of these things quicker But I do believe there's really nothing worth knowing that can be printed on something the size of a bumper sticker

I still love those people in my past I miss their music But some things just don't last I wonder what they're doing now I wonder where they live I wonder if they got the life that only God can give When you leave behind the friends you know And you're not sure where you're going to go 'Cause you can never know what's up the road ahead But still you don't look left and you don't look right And though you stumble in the darkest night When you trust someone you follow where you're led Oh yes I still love those people in my past Capitol Records, MGM Jesus rock is the modern hymn One of you stopped me, one of you let me speak Managers rip you right in two Critics they are the wise man's fool Don't read your hate mail, turn the other cheek The Pharisees rage, the ignorant scoff The self righteous gossip 'cause it gets them off When nobody listens what are you supposed to do You take a look around,so much is wrong You hope somebody brings a change along If nobody else does, maybe it's up to you Oh oh oh I still love those people in my past People in my past People in my past

about

Volume 2 of the Essential Series introduced three previously unheard songs as well as an alternate recording of Even If You Don't Believe. Half of the other tracks are edited, some quite extensively. Larry described it thus: Loaded with 24 songs, this special release is a harvest of plenty. It includes music that is out-of-print (no longer available on CD) plus some unreleased songs which have never been heard before. The "standout songs" featured are all bonus tracks, previously unreleased songs: "People In My Past," "Silver Angels" and the original God Part 2 - from 1971 (95% different lyrics)

Note that Sweet Silver Angels (a cover of the Judee Sill song Jesus Is A Crossmaker) is not included here due to Bandcamp policy on cover versions
